Why spiral when you can oyster?

I've been drawing these on the edges of paper since I was eight - and these are coming into play this year in a big way...stay tuned!

The ink I used here was made from oak galls gathered from our neighborhood park, one of which clonked me on the head as I was grouching about going for a walk for mental health. Fitting.

Hyperventilating over the beauty that is angelfish by @birminghampens , which has been on my ink wishlist FOREVER (alongside sea kelp). Drawn with a kakimori nib, and a sleeping dachshund on my foot.

I consumed too much news, so now I've got to go create and touch grass. A new box of gorgeous inks couldn't arrive at more of a moment of need. Take care of yourselves.

Just a little note to say that if you've messaged or emailed me recently, I'm slowly but surely making my way towards responding ✨ - think of it as digital snail mailllll.

Even though I seem to have lots to say about finding your balance, saying no to protect your energy etc etc etc...I took on a bit too much over the holidays and am somewhat a distraught vapor.

It's so easy for me to forget that even good energy is still energy out. I'm challenging myself to cross off things from my to-do list today, not in a ✔️/done way but a nope, not in my journey type of way.

Boundless I, an absolute celebration of handmade ink from the #pnw , is off to its new home in New York! Always a huge thanks to the amazing team at @artlifting - you make such a difference in my life.

Boundless as a collection illustrates smooth and intentional movement in my studio, practiced daily like a dance or yoga flow. These pieces were such a triumph after a year of shoulder and neck pain. The collection also helped me explore place making through the use of handmade ink, as a way of saying 'I am here' through color.

When Anna contacted me for a private commission, she shared with me her diagnosis story and that being diagnosed with MS had been a 'weird and life-altering adventure' but still considered herself lucky with the speed of her diagnosis (due to family history) amid the fear of uncertainty.

"I think it’s important to not let the unknowns of the future affect my life now, except as motivation to take advantage of the movement and cognitive abilities that I currently have. It's good to have a reminder not to beat myself up for resting, and to say no if I need to - that one is much harder for me.

I like the idea of turning an image of what was a jarring and bad experience into something just truly beautiful. I’m hoping this artwork can somehow help to convey the incredible complexity that is not only this disease, but also my feelings about and adventure with it so far.'

Anna, thank you for trusting me to hold your story and to create this artwork for you. I hope that it is a daily reminder of strength and resilience for you.

Gashadokoru, a yokai (broad umbrella of supernatural beings, monsters, spirits) from Japanese folklore, formed from the spirits and bones of those lost in mass famine or battle into a large and menacing skeleton. The 'starving skeleton' would haunt countryside roads, seeking revenge on travelers. It often is pictured with bulging eyes, preceded only with the 'gachi gachi' sounds from its teeth.

Terrifying.

Here, I've reimagined Gashadokoru featuring groups of skeletons, rather than a single large form. In the series, they're moving quietly through the mundane - a family sleeping, a childhood embrace, enjoying music, sleeping dogs curled next to each other. The skeletons could be any of us

My hope is this choice highlights the right to life and security, using the fear associated with Gashadokuro to underscore our collective awareness of the heavy toll of mass tragedy.

Currently I have seven pieces in this series, with no particular destination in mind. Many of them are over 60" on Yupo, consisting of handmade vine black ink, sumi and flat black gesso.

I've always talked about moods and mental health with my girls by likening it to weather - and right now I'd say I find myself in that sort of grey weather that really gets to Portlanders around April.

I find this system helpful, because it helps move that feeling of blame off our minds, making it an observation instead of identity, plus there's no sense in fighting weather. "I see you're in a storm, I'm here, let me help' vs the 'I'm a bad kid cause I'm crashing out right now.'

When it comes to my kids, I'd focus on bringing comfort back to the body. I'll see if I can take my own advice today and take a walk, have that extra cup of tea, and take a nap. The mornings are crisp, and that's not nothing.

Experimenting with the shippo (七宝) pattern in India ink, behind my skeletons. Shippo translates to "seven treasures" and symbolizes harmony, abundance, and prosperity.

From google, because my coffee has not absorbed yet:
'The pattern itself features an endless, interlocking design of circles that represents the seven sacred treasures of Buddhism, and it is found in various Japanese crafts and textiles.'

An ode to my late summer wild and crispy garden - with #MS I struggle with heat intolerance, so as much as I wish I could be a summer garden person, it's not really in the cards. The good news is the Japanese Anemone is hardy, determined, impossible to kill (even by me) and really likes to be made into vine black ink.

The good news is the Japanese Anemone is hardy, determined, impossible to kill (even by me) and really likes to be made into vine black ink.

I have always loved art, and grew up steeped in it. I went to school for violin performance, but missed studying literature and language. I ended up focusing on Japanese and Asian Studies, and taught English in Japan for a year after graduating.

The creative bug was ever-present though…it just came through in event planning for work and personal projects after hours. It really wasn’t until my multiple sclerosis diagnosis that the proverbial dam broke - I was juggling two in preschool, and was really suffering from ye olde “who am I” crisis that is tired mothers everywhere.

In 2018, after losing my job, my appendix and my grandmother in the span of a week, art was there. I am self-taught, but also held up by a phenomenal network of artists and creatives whose friendship and knowledge have helped me grow.

Through my #colorsofms project work, I have had the honor to connect and work with so many incredible people, change-makers and leaders in the MS community and beyond, including PBS. Brain & Life magazine and podcast, Health Magazine, Montel Williams and more (these can all be found in the link in my bio). I am only seven years into my own diagnosis (in addition to living with #eds #epilepsy #lyme ), and to be perfectly honest with you - I am still in the weeds learning how to navigate my own health journey.

As an artist, if you’re looking for somebody who is super academic and dry…I’m not your gal. I firmly believe anybody can create, and the process of creating is where the power lies. The rest is audacity, which can be exhilarating (and flattening on some days, if you suffer from imposter syndrome like me). The littles are watching, and I want them to see that they can do anything they set their minds to, take up space and that their opinion matters. My daughters have always been at the heart of why I continue to push and put myself out there.

MRI ink and thread works are more demanding on my vision and fine motor skills, and while my DMs are always open for commissions, I am not always able to work on a specific timeframe depending on my health, studio load and family schedule . Please consider signing up for my newsletter to be the first to hear about upcoming openings, in addition to watching my stories here on Instagram.

In addition to my ink and thread MRI, I also offer custom digital sumi MRI. These are minimal but impactful, and can be printed however you'd like (not for the purpose of resale). I am always accepting digital commissions, and my hope is that the easier price point makes them more accessible than an original work.

Currently, my MRI ink and thread works range from $350-1200, with larger or custom sizing and payment plans available. I typically ask for a month to complete these, but it can depend on my health and schedule. My digital MRI linework is a flat $150, with a shorter delivery time.

I have been thankful to paint over 400 beautiful brains, alongside sharing so many of your stories over the years. My MRI work is not limited to multiple sclerosis, so if you have a special project in mind, I’d love to hear from you. How my own health journey and experiences are interpreted through art is constantly evolving, so while my MRI work as I have done them since 2019 may not be forever, please keep an eye on this space.

This spoke to my heart today - (repost from @robslitquotes )

Peeping in from a break mopping my kitchen (while absolutely b l a r i n g Mendelssohn Octet) -

The ebb and flow of this summer feels like life in bold font: hiding in the AC/unrelenting heat, long pain naps and the happiness of spontaneous fun and activity. Relaxed family & home time / joy of watching your kids grow, and the deep-in-the-soul ache that this comfort isn't the reality of so many families right now. Checking email and refilling meds while so much incomprehensible tragedy is going on feels absurd at the least.

But also, a reminder that rest and self-care is resistance.

(Back to furious classical music mopping...I'm good at dispensing advice that I'm still trying to learn myself.)
