I have always loved art, and grew up steeped in it. I went to school for violin performance, but missed studying literature and language. I ended up focusing on Japanese and Asian Studies, and taught English in Japan for a year after graduating.

The creative bug was ever-present though…it just came through in event planning for work and personal projects after hours. It really wasn’t until my multiple sclerosis diagnosis that the proverbial dam broke - I was juggling two in preschool, and was really suffering from ye olde “who am I” crisis that is tired mothers everywhere.

In 2018, after losing my job, my appendix and my grandmother in the span of a week, art was there. I am self-taught, but also held up by a phenomenal network of artists and creatives whose friendship and knowledge have helped me grow.

Through my #colorsofms project work, I have had the honor to connect and work with so many incredible people, change-makers and leaders in the MS community and beyond, including PBS. Brain & Life magazine and podcast, Health Magazine, Montel Williams and more (these can all be found in the link in my bio). I am only seven years into my own diagnosis (in addition to living with #eds #epilepsy #lyme ), and to be perfectly honest with you - I am still in the weeds learning how to navigate my own health journey.

As an artist, if you’re looking for somebody who is super academic and dry…I’m not your gal. I firmly believe anybody can create, and the process of creating is where the power lies. The rest is audacity, which can be exhilarating (and flattening on some days, if you suffer from imposter syndrome like me). The littles are watching, and I want them to see that they can do anything they set their minds to, take up space and that their opinion matters. My daughters have always been at the heart of why I continue to push and put myself out there.

An important tenet of my studio work is that I create when I am able, in order to prioritize my health and balance. MRI ink and thread works are more demanding on my vision and fine motor skills, and while my DMs are always open for commissions, I am not always able to work on a specific timeframe depending on my health, studio load and family schedule . Please consider signing up for my newsletter to be the first to hear about upcoming openings, in addition to watching my stories here on Instagram.

In addition to my ink and thread MRI, I also offer custom digital sumi MRI. These are minimal but impactful, and can be printed however you'd like (not for the purpose of resale). I am always accepting digital commissions, and my hope is that the easier price point makes them more accessible than an original work.

Currently, my MRI ink and thread works range from $350-1200, with larger or custom sizing and payment plans available. I typically ask for a month to complete these, but it can depend on my health and schedule. My digital MRI linework is a flat $150, with a shorter delivery time.

I have been thankful to paint over 400 beautiful brains, alongside sharing so many of your stories over the years. My MRI work is not limited to multiple sclerosis, so if you have a special project in mind, I’d love to hear from you. This spoke to my heart today - (repost from @robslitquotes )

Peeping in from a break mopping my kitchen (while absolutely b l a r i n g Mendelssohn Octet) -

The ebb and flow of this summer feels like life in bold font: hiding in the AC/unrelenting heat, long pain naps and the happiness of spontaneous fun and activity. Relaxed family & home time / joy of watching your kids grow, and the deep-in-the-soul ache that this comfort isn't the reality of so many families right now. Checking email and refilling meds while so much incomprehensible tragedy is going on feels absurd at the least.

But also, a reminder that rest and self-care is resistance.

(Back to furious classical music mopping...I'm good at dispensing advice that I'm still trying to learn myself.)

Wilted from unprecedented times, but bolstered by summer small magic (discovering a growing lineup of dried mud creatures on my back deck railing, fattening figs, wondering over Felipe's annual dirt crater) ----so all I can do is paint skeletons.

The matte black is an over-painting, covering swaths of ink I made a summer ago (this one was from a handful of copper scrap). Feels so good to paint over them, even though they felt sacred a year ago + this painting in reverse quiets my overactive brain.

(Consider this a PSA, expect lots more skeletons in this space)

This one was a little snapshot of a nap, complete with a chiweewee in bagel formation, a second chiweewee at the hip, and three of four Pyrenees paws (the fourth being in the air, naturally). ✨

Still upright over here, as long as I stick to air-conditioning or the respite of shade; it's been a while so 👋🏻.

May-June rocked my system with some epic creative deadlines and projects + nuclear-level end-of-school-year momming et al, so I'm just beginning to reorient myself in the studio.

With the news, the world, and the heaviness, all I want to paint are skeletons at the moment. A landscape turns into a skeleton. A colorful ink wash? Skeleton. I sit down and say ok, let's paint something joyful...skeleton.

They're not the least bit spooky, because it's the meat that is the scary bit. In fact, were I just a skeleton, I think I'd get along with the healthcare system just fine. I'll share more soon, because I'm up to my eyeballs in skeletons over here after a spring that was full of beautiful brains and Torii gates.

How to rest without guilt.
How to find beauty when your body feels like a betrayal.

Turns out, chronic illness is a relentless (and weirdly poetic) teacher.

Not the one I asked for, but… here we are. Making things anyway. Not despite the mess, because of it.

This one’s for anyone who’s had to create with a body or brain that doesn’t play nice! You’re not lazy. You’re legendary.

But something started to feel off. I was misplacing things, forgetting names, and battling exhaustion that wouldn’t quit.

I listened to my body and went to my PCP, which led to a whirlwind of tests: CT scan, MRIs, blood work, even a spinal tap. Two and a half months later, the diagnosis: multiple sclerosis. My first reaction? Relief. But that quickly turned into a flood of questions. MS was a whole new world, and I was right in the middle of it.

At first, I kept it to my inner circle as I navigated this new reality. Relapses, steroid treatments, and a couple of DMTs—none of it was a one-size-fits-all solution. I quickly learned that managing MS wasn’t just about appointments and medications; it was about learning to listen to my body, giving myself grace, and adapting to each new challenge.

By 2019, things took a serious turn. I couldn’t focus, was mixing up numbers and letters, and felt disconnected from my brain and body. A brain MRI revealed a rare, enhancing tumefactive MS lesion (about the size of a quarter!). That’s when the real battle began: TEN rounds of steroids, a new DMT, and intensive speech and language therapy.

I had to step away from my teaching career—something I had poured my heart into. Losing that part of myself was tough, but opening up about my journey has connected me with incredible people and brought new opportunities. I’ve tested my limits with incredible experiences, like learning to box, conquering the steps at Gillette Stadium, walking in a fashion show, and rock climbing in Colorado. Each demonstrates to me just how strong I am, both individually and as part of the MS community. It’s also led me to a realization: vulnerability is powerful – OMG 🧡”

“Slowly but surely, I’ve adjusted to a new normal. Taking care of my body and my health has taken on a new meaning. It’s tough to not know what the future may bring, but medicine is advancing every single day. Participating in MS research studies has been a great outlet for me (I’ve become a pro at MRIs from all the study MRIs I’ve had!) & I hope that one day, research will find a cure for MS.

As I reflect on my MS journey thus far, I feel so much gratitude. For a while, my support system was a small circle of friends, coworkers, and family. It took me a year before I could talk about MS publicly. To my surprise, there is a huge community out there. Every time I’ve shared my story, I seem to find another connection of someone who has MS themselves or knows & loves someone who has MS. I wish I had gained the courage sooner.

I was living in New York City at the time, and my ophthalmologist recommended I see a neurologist to try to get to the bottom of some longstanding symptoms like headaches, lightheadedness, and vision changes. While being worked up for vestibular migraines, I had my first MRI brain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ll never forget pulling up the MRI results on my patient portal. The words jumped out of the screen: “foci of both acute and chronic demyelination.” My world just stopped. The physician’s call shortly after confirmed what I already knew but could never have been prepared for. A few days later, I saw my Multiple Sclerosis specialist for the first time. I’ll always be grateful for the team at @nyphospital @weillcornell - as a healthcare provider myself, I have a special appreciation for their kindness and incredible expertise.”

I’ve been thinking about this question after reading "The Mother Artist" by Catherine Ricketts. It asks something that lives at the heart of my work: What do women who carry both creation and caretaking know that the world often misses?

"Mothers know how to make something beautiful even when there’s little time, little space, little recognition. They know how to tend to the unseen, and still imagine more."

This kind of making — born from constraint, from devotion, from invisible labor — has a wisdom all its own. It reminds me that the worth of our work isn’t measured by how loudly it demands attention, but by the tenderness, the persistence, the complexity woven into it.

Leaning into ikebana-inspired ink lately — maybe because Portland feels like it’s blushing. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom downtown, each petal a quiet reminder of the stories rooted here. Gifted by Japan in 1990 to honor Japanese American lives and legacies, these blooms are more than beautiful — they’re memory in motion.

🏆 The highest bidder will be notified and sent payment instructions.
